Our sick, sick boy...

Pax has been sick before... a few colds, an ear infection, stomach bug that last 24 hours and croup when he was little bitty but let me just say... we didn't know what sick was until the evening of March 24th.  Pax is an awesome sleeper  - if he wakes up in the middle of the night its brief and never requires us to go into his bedroom.  I just check the video monitor and roll over.  This night however... he sat up in bed, was coughing and was whining.  I hesitated going in his room initially thinking he would lay back down and go to sleep but that mommy intuition kicked in and I knew something wasn't quite right.

I walked into Paxton's nursery responding to coughing and listening to him "whimper" for a few minutes and was slapped in the face welcomed by the horrific smell of vomit. This is a first - ever. Spit up yes, vomit no. This is the second time he has ever vomited and - it - was - everywhere.  He was helpless and upset - we stripped him, stripped his bed, threw everything in the washing machine and if you have a crib bumper in your child's crib YOU KNOW what its like to change a crib sheet at 4 in the morning - shoot me.

The days dragged on, the vomiting continued a little over 24 hours and then the diarrhea began.  Im not talking normal diarrhea... I'm talking worse than newborn explosive diapers.  I had to change his clothes and give him a bath multiple times a day.  Trashed a few clothes to be honest and had to have two rugs washed.  We went through I dont know how many diapers and I just kept waiting on him to get better.  He didn't feel good, was running a high temperature, wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink, wanted me to hold him 24/7, was in an overall crabby mood (I don't blame him), had a red bottom from diarrhea and frankly we decided it was time to take him to the doctor - this was not just a stomach bug.

Rotavirus is what it was.  Over the course of 6 days he lost almost 2 pounds.  After 2 doctor visits, getting super creative and putting him on a strict diet we avoided hospitalization.  Our main goal was to keep him hydrated and not losing any more weight.  Y'all - our baby was so sick.

The point of this post though for me revolves around the whole theory that if you have a child - you would do anything to take their pain away.  You would switch spots with them in a heartbeat.  This was certainly one of those times for Matthew and I and certainly a time that tested our patience, gag reflexes, creativity and judgement.  We are thankful to have a well little boy now - thankful for an awesome pediatrician and thankful for sweet prayers.  We got in lots of snuggles and saw the strength in our tiny little guy.
Night one - throwing up all night yet still holding tight to his motorcycle

My pitiful boy - off to the doctor

We went through many many towels and spent at least 4 days parked on the couch.

Our paci out of the crib  - only for a sickie :)

I got a smile!
