I was out at my baby cousins high school graduation and while I was gone, Brinlee simply slid on a hot wheels car, fell on her bottom and from that point forward could not walk.
I found out about the accident the following morning and when I set her down out of her crib not only did she not want to walk but she couldn't walk. That mom gut feeling took over and I began realizing after several tries that she DID want to walk - she just couldn't.
Matthew and Paxton had Nascar tickets so they left Friday morning for the weekend and I was off to the pediatrician to just get her professionally evaluated. After checking out her leg and thoroughly questioning me on HOW it happened we were sent to Conroe regional hospital to have x-rays done - JUST IN CASE there is something more going on.
Once there they were wonderful - got us right in and sent us on our way. We live about 20 minutes from the hospital so I went home afterwards thinking "oh it will be a while". We were home and within 5 minutes I received a call from our pediatrician that she had a BROKEN TIBIA.
My heart sank. This poor baby had slept all night, woke up to us trying to encourage her to walk, driving around with her rear-facing crying every time she extended her legs (now realizing why she was in so much pain), carrying her around from the doctors office to the car to the hospital to the car, home and then back in the car!
Our pediatrician had some connections to a pediatric orthopedic surgeon in The Woodlands and was able to get us an appt. within 30 minutes of when he called and we loaded up in the car and were on our way. Of course I called Matthew and told him the news - he was shocked - and honestly told him not to rush home. There was nothing he could do (other than moral support) and I really didn't know what to expect. My mom did meet me at the doctors office and she was able to be a good distraction for Brinlee.
The doctor confirmed it was a broken tibia and questioned me a TON on how it happened. Once we explained the fall he said that its very common when young children make a sudden fall like she did for bones to break. He used the following analogy - young kids bones are like little rubber bands. They haven't hardened yet like ours - when they make a sudden fall its as if that rubber band is suddenly pulled tight and it can snap. That's what happened in her case. Thankfully - it was not displaced and no surgery was needed.
The casting process began and the sweet nurses were nice enough to cast her baby first - THANK GOODNESS FOR THIS.
Brinlee sat still and was a champ for the entire thing. Didn't cry - didn't scream or freak or anything. They asked me if I wanted a water proof cast and mentioned it does cost more. "How much more?" "Like $50" PUT IT ON HER IT IS JUNE IN TEXAS AND WE NEED TO SWIM.
We were told she should be walking in 4 days and we could carry on with life like normal. So we did :)
That was that.
We were off to mall to build a bear and she grabbed a quick nap in the stroller. We even had to buy some new "baggy leg" pajamas since all her other pajamas are tight fitting. We'll always remember this little build a bear from this day.
We spent the weekend swimming, playing, encouraging walking and being silly!
She did eventually walk - on day 4 - and we did carry on life as normal. We had a few changes and challenges along the way but for the most part she was a champ and just dealt with it so sweetly. The only downside from the whole thing, aside from just having a cast in general - was having to turn her forward facing. We wanted to leave her rear facing as long as possible and with the cast we had to turn her car seat around. But if thats all I really have to complain about than lucky us!
First ponytail!
First movie theater experience for sister!
Taking care of babies :)
VBS camel ride!
First haircut!
Just doing some household chores in her cast!
Swimming at JW Marriott!
July 3rd came and this was supposed to be THE DAY she would get it off. We did an x ray and the doctor was positive the tibia was healed and ready for the cast to come off!
This time Daddy was with us! Brinlee clung onto him tight going in the office :)
Safety first!
Not so sure about the saw that was cutting through babys leg.
She did not like this part - she did great until they got to the inner thighs (more tender and more sensitive from the cast rubbing)
All done!! Cast off!! Sucker in hand!! Happy girl!!! Let Freedom ring!
